Classroom Etiquette

Proper classroom etiquette is essential to the education and training of a dancer. The following rules are universal and are followed by all major dance programs and professional companies.

  • Class dress requirements must be followed at all times.
  • No jewelry (except for small earrings) is to be worn in class or rehearsals.
  • Elastic is to be sewn on ballet shoes.  Ribbons are to be sewn on pointe shoes.  Elastic around the waist must be worn if required for your level.
  • No streetshoes on the dance floor. Do not wear dance shoes outside the studio.
  • Cover-ups or street clothes must be worn over your uniform when leaving the studio. Please label your shoes and belongings and do not bring valuables.  We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • No gum chewing, eating, or drinking is allowed in the studios.
  • No Smoking.  Smoking is prohibited in and around the dance facility.
  • Only capped water bottles are allowed in the studios.
  • Because of the sweaty nature of class, please bring a small towel and use it.
  • Talking, leaning on the barre, yawning, and leaving class before class is over is not acceptable.
  • If a student must leave before class is over, he/she must notify the teacher before class should there be an extenuating circumstance. Ask to be excused by the   teacher before class begins so as not to disrupt the class.
  • Arrive early and be ready to start class on time. If late, students may not enter class without teacher permission and must wait for the exercise in progress to be over before entering the studio. Students arriving late may be asked to sit and observe instead of participate.
  • If you are going to be absent please call the office so that your teacher can be   notified before class begins. If a make up class is available for your level, arrangements can be made then.
  • Stay in the back of the room if you do not know the combination.
  • Eyes and attention must always stay on teacher.
  • Be appreciative of corrections and apply them. Students will progress only as fast     as they can take corrections.
  • Progression requires consistent attendance.
  • Students should never stop in the middle of an exercise unless an injury is sustained.
  • Do not talk back to the teacher regardless of the situation. It is improper to question the teacher’s authority. If you have a problem, talk to the teacher after class.
  • After class applaud the teacher and thank the teacher for class.
  • Be kind to your classmates. Display of temper and rudeness are unacceptable. GOSSIPING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!!
  • Please keep the dressing room and lounge neat and clean. Use the trash cans.
